Tonight there was a screening of "My Christmas Soldier"
at the Aliceville
Museum in Aliceville, Alabama. Museum Director Ann Kirksey
organized the even in conjuction with the Alabama-Germany partnership.
The screening was fantastic, with a complete spread of sandwiches,
cakes, and other goodies that I generally don't get to enjoy when
showing the movie! Some wonderful people were in attendance, including
veterans from WWII who graciously shared stories far more interesting
than the one I was showing!
If you ever get a chance to check out the museum please do. They
have a fantastic collection of German POW camp artifacts from
the original camp in Aliceville. |

Today I visited the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg,
Mississippi and had a wonderful interview with Chad Daniels, director
of the museum. Camp Shelby was "home" to many German
POW's during WWII and the museum's collection of artifacts from
this era is excellent. If you are ever in the vicinity I encourage
you to stop by for a visit. More details about the museum are
available at the web site: http://armedforcesmuseum.us/ |

Work has begun on the documentary that will accompany the movie
on the DVD. I met with a wonderful man in Florida today by the
name of Hermann. He was captured in Africa and brought to the
US during WWII and lived here as a POW until the end of the war.
His first-hand account is incredibly interesting and will make
a great addition to the DVD. Hermann gave me his entire afternoon
to talk history with him, and I appreciate every minute. He is
also an accomplished squeezebox player and sent me home with a
CD of his music, so look for a bit of that on the DVD as well! |

We laid down the voice over narration for the film today with
Mac Powell from THIRD DAY. Mac is a fantastic guy and a pleasure
to work with. He is playing the part of Adult Gordy, the grown-up
version of the young boy in the story.
There have been many conversations along the way about what to
do with the character of Adult Gordy and how best to present him.
Do we leave our 1943 setting and show him all grown up? Is he
perhaps in a war now and reflecting back? Will narration be a
crutch or will it contribute to the story? All worries forever
ceased the moment Mac began to lay down the narration. The natural
cadence of Mac's speech and the southern charm that lies in his
voice are absolutely perfect for this movie.
The last big piece of this filmmaking puzzle is now in place!
When watching the trailer you will notice that Mac was also gracious
enough to lay down a vocal track of "Silent Night." |
14 June 2006
We just wrapped photography on "My Christmas Soldier!"
Many wonderful people came together to make this happen. Great
thanks go out to the town of Gordon, GA for allowing us full use
of their beautifully restored train
depot. Also, the Southeastern
Railway Museum in Duluth, GA was incredibly gracious in their
assistance with this production. The museum houses many restored
railway cars, including the Superb, a heavyweight private
car built in 1911. The Superb was used by President Woodrow
Wilson as well as President Warren G. Harding. In fact, when Harding
died in 1923 his body was carried on the Superb from
San Francisco to Washington DC. The musuem has a nice article
here.
